"Wind theft", Roman chestnuts, melting glaciers & other stories

Hello! Here are some of my recent stories, all for the BBC- it's been a really interesting few months, reporting on melting borders in the Alps; spending a day with Italy's mountain rescue; and probing the rising problem of "wind theft", amongst other stories. Also - what can chestnuts tell us about the rise and fall of the Roman Empire?

The Californian megafloods that start in Japan - I interviewed the scientists chasing atmospheric rivers through the sky, to help us understand this increasingly important form of extreme weather

What chestnuts reveal about the Roman Empire - this was one very popular with readers, and a lot of fun to write!

Witnessing a melting border and changing mountain, since the 1980s - I travelled to the remains of a glacier and interviewed the owner of a mountain refuge there, hearing about the dramatic change he's observed in his own lifetime.

Spies, bikes and smuggled ink: the environmentalists who took on the Stasi - for the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall

A day with Italy's mountain and cave rescue teams - whose work is changing profoundly, due to climate change and mass tourism

The lost worlds emerging in the Alps - melting glaciers reveal a previously hidden ancient past

What is "wind theft" and why is it on the rise? This mysterious effect is plaguing wind farms - a really interesting side-effect of the offshore expansion.

The World War Two history hidden in Germany's green spaces - Trees and parks still bear WW2 scars; but green spaces also played a crucial role in Nazis' terror and antisemitic persecution, which is still not fully researched, to this day.

Thank you for reading, hope you enjoy them!

Sophie
